eTIPS
Did you know how Providers can save time by using Direct Editing commands with Dragon Medical clients?
Direct Editing commands allow healthcare providers to perform faster routine editing of recognized text by voice. In previous versions of Dragon Medical, routine commands used for editing text required a (2) two-step operation where the provider had to first select the text before editing it. With Direct Editing, providers can now perform these same routine actions in (1) one single step.
The following short video shows how to save time by simplifying the editing of recognized text using Direct Editing commands.

Did you know about the monitoring of, and the startup sequence for, DMNE server services?
Customers using the Dragon Medical 360 | Network Edition (DMNE) on-premise product have the responsibility of maintaining uptime for their implementation. Dragon Medical Support will assist wherever possible to help our customers achieve their uptime goals.
Dragon Medical Support has noticed a trend affecting customers where one or more DMNE services are not running due to the reboot of their DMNE servers. This scenario typically occurs after DMNE servers are rebooted for various maintenance tasks, including the application of software patches. In this case, the servers are then re-started without:
- Adherence to the recommended sequence for stopping and starting the DMNE services
- Verification of DMNE services having started successfully after the reboot
IMPORTANT: Nuance strongly recommends following the recommended sequences below for gracefully stopping and starting the DMNE services. Proper adherence can avoid services from failing to start, but also minimize data corruption within the SQL databases for DMNE.
DMNE Service Startup Sequence
Start the following services in this order to launch the DMNE functions:
- SQL Server Service
- DMNE Profile Optimization (PO) server
- DMNE Speech Node server(s)
- DMNE Nuance Management Server(s) (NMS)
DMNE Service Shutdown Sequence
Stop the following services in this order to shut down the DMNE functions:
- DMNE Nuance Management Server(s) (NMS)
- DMNE Speech Node server(s)
- DMNE Profile Optimization (PO) server
- SQL Server Service
Monitoring of Windows and DMNE Services
IMPORTANT: Nuance strongly recommends that our DMNE customers monitor the following services and their associated network ports:
- Nuance Management Service Nuance.NAS.Server.exe 8731 8051
- Profile Optimizer Server POService.exe 8001
- Profile Optimizer Speech Node POSpeechNode.exe 8000
- Microsoft SQL 1433 (unless named instances are assigned a dynamic port range)
- Microsoft IIS 80
While there are no formal dependencies listed for the above DMNE services, these services are dependent on the SQL Server Service having completed starting prior to these services starting themselves. Depending on the customer implementation, it may become necessary to configure the DMNE Nuance Management Server service's Startup Type to Automatic (Delayed Start) located under the service's Properties window and General tab.
Monitoring alerts should be configured to notify administrators and IT personnel of any disruption of service.
Nuance does not endorse any specific monitoring application.

Did you know a technical white paper is now available about migrating data objects to DMNE NMS?
A new technical white paper was recently released for the Dragon Medical 360 | Network Edition (DMNE) product that addresses migrating data objects to the Nuance Management Server (NMS):
As of DMNE version 2.1 and newer, a number of data objects are administered and distributed via the NMS, rather than via the Data Distribution Tool (DDT). The data objects are:
- Command Sets - which replace custom commands distributed via DDT
- Word Sharing - which replaces custom words distributed via DDT
- Auto-texts
When upgrading your on-premise NMS installation to a newer version, or migrating from an on-premise installation of DMNE to NMS in the Nuance Cloud, these data objects must be migrated before any Dragon Medical client connect to the NMS.
To access and download the above technical white paper, please log in to iSupport and search for solution 14111: Dragon Medical 360 | Network Edition User Documentation. Look for the Technical White Papers table under the Version 2.3 section.

Did you know about the list of Dosage Abbreviations expanded in Dragon Medical?
The Dragon Medical products contain an Expand dosage abbreviations setting within their Formatting Options. The table below provides detail on which abbreviations are covered under this setting and what the expansions are.
NOTE: The dosage abbreviations within this table cannot be changed individually. The entire list is affected as a group by the above formatting setting. So, enabling this setting inserts the full word or phrase when the user dictates any of the dosage abbreviations. For example, "qd" is written "every day."
